DMAB Summer Camp Finale – July 20, 6 pm at Karpeles Manuscript Museum

Summer Camp_2012

Our Music, Arts and Academic Summer Camp ended on July 20th with a fabulous Summer Camp Showcase finale. The children had the opportunity to perform in front of many family, friends and DMAB supporters.

The evening started out with the DMAB drum line which was lead by the Artistic Director, Ulysses Owens along with a group of boys and one girl. The drums were made out of plastic paint buckets with the DMAB logo painted on them in the DMAB colors, orange and silver. The atmosphere was electrifying as Ulysses blew his whistle to command the little drummers to march down the aisle in step with each other. The audience loved them and it was a great way to start the showcase.

We were very proud of Seth Johnson as he stood in front of the family and friend and recited the DMAB Pledge. This was a powerful moment for this 7 year old boy to make this powerful declaration:

I am not a Statistic
I will Achieve Only Great Things
I am Just As Good As Anyone Else
I Can Do Anything I Set My Mind To Do!

The Artistic Director introduced the Arts Segments with included dance, drama and the true artistry of rap. The audience experienced works from Shakespeare to August Wilson, dance from ballet to tap, and spoken word to rap. The arts segment ended with a full chorus led by our guest artist from New York, Charles Bryant. Mr. Bryant comes with an impressive resume with a BA Degree from Morehouse College and a Master of Music Degree from the prestigious Manhattan School of Music. Charles led the chorus in a mini concert which consisted of some original music along with music from other artists.

We ended the evening with an original song, “Dream On” which brought the audience to their feet with applause. The kids looked beautiful in their green and purple t-shirts that displayed a special logo design created by our partner, On Ideas.

We would like to especially thank Riverside Dental for providing the t-shirts for the kids, Chestnut Law Firm for underwriting the venue cost of the Karpeles Manuscript Museum and Paul Figura Photography. We would also like to thank all of the supporters of the “Sponsor A Child Campaign” for summer camp 2012. It was indeed an evening to remember for our summer campers and staff.
